Abstract / 講座內容 :
It is a common belief that economic modernization causes greater equality between women and men. Yet as older gender regimes are eroded, new forms of exploitation of women seem to emerge: in factory labour, prostitution, and family life. Men (especially the men of privileged social groups) control most of the new institutions of global capitalism. Violence against women is still endemic, globally, and women are targeted in new forms of civil conflict. Is modernity, therefore, the prelude to a new feudalism in gender relations? This public lecture will discuss evidence about these questions from different parts of the world, and will offer a new view of how gender relations are changing globally.

Abstract / 講座內容 :
It is often assumed that gender equality is "women's business", and men have no role in reforming gender relations. But men are crucial to gender reform, and their role is increasingly debated. In 2004, the United Nations adopted a policy document about how men and boys can be involved in achieving gender equality. Raewyn Connell, who helped to write this document, will discuss the issue of social justice in gender relations, the changing place of men in debates about gender equality, the relation between men and women's movements, and the new research about men and masculinities.

Chair / 主持 :
Anita K.W. Chan, PhD
Associate Professor
The Hong Kong Institute of Education
Dr. Anita K.W. Chan came to gender studies when she was an undergraduate. From then, she developed deep interests in gender issues in the fields of education and family studies. In 2005, she joined the Institute of Education as she believes a gendering perspective is important in teachers’ education, which helps nurture a younger generation who can uphold equality and respect differences. Her current research projects cover topics like gender and educational leadership, cultural constructions of motherhood, and changing gender relationships in Hong Kong families. She is the co-editor of the book Gendering Hong Kong Society: A Reader (Hong Kong: Oxford University Press)
