(English version)

Dorinne Kondo, Professor of Anthropology and American Studies at the University of Southern California, U.S., will visit Hong Kong in October as visiting scholar of the Public Lecture Series on Gender Studies 2010, organized by the Gender Studies Programme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and sponsored by the Lee Hysan Foundation.

Professor Kondo is the author of Crafting Selves: Power, Gender, and Discourses of Identity in a Japanese Workplace (1990), the winner of the J.I. Staley Prize for a book having an impact on the field of Anthropology. Her second book About Face: Performing Race in Fashion and Theatre (Routledge, 1997) won the Cultural and Literary Studies Award from the Association for Asian American Studies. Professor Kondo is also a playwright and dramaturge. Her first play Dis)graceful(l) Conduct received a national comedy playwriting award.

Professor Kondo will give two public lectures during her stay in Hong Kong. In the first one, titled “Gender-, Race- and Genre-bending in Contemporary U.S. Theatre”, she will focus on the work of contemporary artists of color—African American playwright-actress Anna Deavere Smith and playwright David Henry Hwang—and analyze the ways their work destabilizes—and inevitably reinscribes—theatrical convention.

In the second lecture, titled “Seamless: A Play Reading with Commentary”, Professor Kondo will present selected scenes from her play SEAMLESS, analyzing the dilemmas of gender and racial representation she faces, and the implications of her position as an anthropologist “going native” as a playwright in the world of theatre.

Apart from the two public lectures, Professor Kondo will also hold a postgraduate seminar titled “Gender, Race and the Trope of Performance in Anthropology and Cultural Studies”, and a faculty roundtable focusing on Gender, Race, and Corporeal Epistemologies.

Public Lecture by Richa Nagar, Scholar of Gender Studies from India / 印度性別研究學者來港演講

(The Chinese version follows the English one.)

Richa Nagar - Professor of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, Associate Dean for Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, is going to be the speaker for the upcoming lecture of the Public Lecture Series on Gender Studies 2010, organized by the Gender Studies Programme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and sponsored by the Lee Hysan Foundation.

Prof. Nagar is a founding member of Sangtin Kisaan Mazdoor Sangathan (Sangtin Peasants and Workers’ Organization) in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. She has co-authored Sangtin Yatra; and her academic researches on gender, race, and communal politics among South Asian communities in postcolonial Tanzania have resulted in numerous articles and essays. Since 1996, Prof. Nagar’s works have focused mainly on collaborative efforts that seek to reconfigure the political terrain and processes associated with “empowerment” projects aimed at “the poor.”

The coming lecture in July by Prof. Nagar is titled ‘From Feminist Fieldwork to Collaborative Praxis: Lessons from the Sangtin Movement in India’. Prof. Nagar will focus on her ongoing collaboration with the Sangtin organization in India. This movement of 5000 rural peasants and laborers began as a collective of nine authors who critically reflected on how caste, class, religion, and gender shape the lives of poor rural women, and shape the internal processes, effectiveness, and limitations of non-governmental organizations that work on their behalf.  The lecture will highlight the key moments in this journey, as well as the transformative dialogues triggered by the collaboration among rural and academic communities, NGOs, activist collectives, and donor agencies.

For enquiries, please call 2969-1026 or e-mail to genderstudiesPLS@cuhk.edu.hk. Members of the public are welcome to register for the public lecture at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gender/publiclecture.htm.

Public Lecture by Meltem Ahıska, Scholar of Sociology from Turkey / 土耳其社會學學者Meltem Ahıska 來港演講

(中文版在英文版之後)

Meltem Ahıska, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul), Turkey, will visit Hong Kong and be the speaker for the upcoming lecture of the Public Lecture Series on Gender Studies 2010, organized by the Gender Studies Programme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and sponsored by the Lee Hysan Foundation.

Dr. Ahıska is the author of The Magical Door of Radio: Occidentalism and Political Subjectivity (Radyonun Sihirli Kapısı: Garbiyatçılık ve Politik Öznellik) and the co-author of ‘The Indivisible Unity of the Nation’: Fragmenting Nationalism(s) in the Democratization Process (‘Milletin Bölünmez Bütünlüğü’ : Demokratikleşme Sürecinde Parçalayan Milliyetçilik(ler)). She has also contributed to Waiting for the Barbarians: A Tribute to Edward Said with a chapter entitled ‘Orientalism/Occidentalism: The Impasse of Modernity’, and various publications on Occidentalism, social memory, gender and related issues. Her new book, Occidentalism in Turkey: Questions of Modernity and National Identity in Turkish Radio Broadcasting by I.B.Tauris of London, is forthcoming as well.

The coming lecture in April by Dr. Ahıska is titled ‘The Gendered Grammar of Occidentalism: Modes of addressing violence against women in Turkey’. She will take Occidentalism as a historical and dialogical construction of modernity in Turkey in relation to the so-called “East” and “West”, and argue that Occidentalism has established a performative grammar of power, which can be put into service for explaining away, and legitimizing gender discrimination and violence by using the terms of a projected Westernism.
